PROJECT EXAMPLES
Although Capital Healthcare Planning’s experience prepares us to work in any market, we understand every situation requires unique approaches and solutions. Outlined below are project examples that illustrate the depth, breadth and wide variety of services that we provide to our clients.
Memorial Hermann Healthcare System
Location: Houston, TX
Timeframe: August 2008 – Present
Overview: Memorial Hermann Healthcare System (MHHS) is an eleven hospital system with net patient revenues of nearly $5 billion. MHHS includes a nationally respected academic medical center and extensive teaching and clinical capabilities with multiple locations in the Houston metropolitan area. The Houston marketplace is unique among metropolitan areas. Houston has both the Texas Medical Center, one of the largest core medical centers in the country, and an extremely competitive suburban market.
MHHS has recognized that the “center” of Houston has been moving west for a number of years. A core system strategy has been to redefine one of their existing campuses into the “medical center of the west” to provide a viable option for west Houston to the Texas Medical Center. Capital Healthcare Planning was selected to assist in the development of business plans for the new medical center west. Working across multiple service lines and core acute care products we developed a plan currently under implementation that will consolidate tertiary services to this site while generating almost $40M of incremental contribution by year 5.
Additionally, Capital has assisted the System with an $80M capital expansion plan at a suburban hospital and lead service line planning for the System including Emergency Services, Heart & Vascular, Cancer, Neurosciences and Sport Medicine/Orthopedics.

West Penn Allegheny Health System
Location: Pittsburgh, PA
Timeframe: May 2008 – 2012
Overview: The Allegheny Health Network (formerly West Penn Allegheny Health System (WPAHS)) is a six hospital system with net patient revenues of $2.4 billion. AHN includes a nationally respected academic medical center and extensive teaching and clinical capabilities with multiple locations in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. AHN is located in highly consolidated and competitive marketplace.
Capital Healthcare Planning was engaged to assist during a turn-around of WPAHS. We worked directly with Huron Consulting Group and led the strategic and facility planning process that sought to streamline the ailing system. One hospital was closed and another was re-positioned from an underperforming tertiary facility to a high performing community hospital and ambulatory focal point. Tertiary services were concentrated at the flagship hospital while plans for ambulatory expansion were developed across the market. Our work in concert with the efforts of numbers other players led to the eventual acquisition of WPAHS by Highmark. The system has since posted a return to profitability.
Methodist Healthcare System
Location: San Antonio, TX
Timeframe: 2004 – Ongoing
Overview: CHP has assisted the Methodist Healthcare System with numerous projects over the past several years. CHP was engaged to develop an in-depth strategic analysis for a Freestanding Emergency Center in Boerne, Texas. A comprehensive market assessment supported development of detailed population based model estimating Freestanding Emergency Center volumes and facility space drivers. We worked with Methodist through numerous scenarios to arrive at final recommendations.
Based upon the findings, a Freestanding Emergency Center was built which has proved highly successful. Retrospective analysis has shown a very close correlation between projected and actual volumes. CHP is currently assisting Methodist with development of a network of freestanding emergency centers across the San Antonio market.
Additional projects for Methodist have included market assessment, strategic planning, physician demand planning and acquisition analysis.
